What does one do when one is bitten by the cooking bug ????
1. Read too many cooking blogs
2. Make a huge list of recipes that you can make
3. Think of all the reasons not to make it like lack of ingredients, too hot, too long a recipe yada yada.
4. Curse yourself for having developed an interested in cooking
5. Just get on with it and start cooking.
So recapping all the useless points above, I did the same. Well, I am a non cooker(100 % sure no such term exists! :) ). So unfortunately, for the past 2 weeks, I've developed this weird interest in cooking. Now this is super weird for me cause I'm one of those people who has always resisted going to the kitchen, no matter how hungry I am. Hmm..maybe that explains my love for all kinds of junk food ! :)
Anyway, visited this awesome blog by Anjana Chaturvedi a few weeks ago and have been hooked ever since. What I loved about her food was that she prepares food sans onion and garlic ..the kind of food that I have. Having pored over the website, one particular recipe caught my interest. Since I have a special love for green chillies I decided to make this recipe of Bharli Mirch. Imean whats not to love about this. The recipe had green chillies as well as yummy sev in it. Was in seventh heaven when I read this !
So at night 9 pm, I decided to make this recipe. Everything went fine and I made the green chillies. But the real story started an hour later. OMG !! I cant describe the way my hands were on fire. No amount of putting my hands in the freezer or pouring water over them would cause the burning to cease. So as usual, I took the help of the good ol web and tried to find out ways to make the chilli burn to go away.
So at night 12, here I was ..trying everything from soaking my hands in yoghurt and milk to rubbing lemons and tomatoes over my hand to pouring apple cider vingegar to running my hands through my hair( I know sounds really douchey..but this was the advice a website gave.. and I was like..what the hell..I'm desperate...I'll try even that remedy!)..But... no matter what I tried it was all in vain...the burning just wouldnt go way...Well..so here I was..thinking at night 2 ..that I'im gonna be spending the whole night this way and then I came across a magic remedy ! :)
Voila..that was..drink cough syrup and go to sleep ! Sounds crazy..but at that moment I was willing to give it a try and managed to get some beauty sleep thanks to the cough syrup !
Anyway..lesson learnt the hard way..when dealing with peppers, either wear gloves or wash your hands vigoursly asap. Better still the ..dont make em just buy em ! Cause you dont want to be like me dealing with crazy chill burn.!
And hey if all else fails..there's always the magical COUGH SYRUP !
Adios for now !
PS: If anyone has even read this blog and has a better remedy to stop chilli burn , please do let me know !
